Strengthening Cybersecurity for Nonprofits

The Canadian Centre for Nonprofit Digital Resilience (CCNDR) has released the first-ever report on building the cybersecurity of Canada’s nonprofits. The report was produced in collaboration with stakeholders, outlining a shared vision and strategy for the nonprofit sector to safeguard its data and operations.

Cybersecurity Threats & Challenges Facing Nonprofits

Nonprofits face the same cybersecurity threats as other Canadian organizations. Cyber attacks can come in many forms, including ransomware attacks, phishing attacks, and data breaches. The CCNDR Report listed five obstacles that nonprofits face restricting their ability to have effective cybersecurity controls to keep their systems and data safe:

  1. Awareness & Attention

  2. Funding Restrictions

  3. Scale

  4. Time Horizon

  5. Outdated Hardware & Software

Every Canadian nonprofit is empowered to securely
meet its mission and protect the organization and its
beneficiaries from cyber threats.

Overcoming the Challenges

The Working Group recommended five strategic objectives for the sector to overcome the challenges nonprofits are facing:

  • Objective 1: Nonprofit boards, executives, and staff understand their risks and obligations and prioritize cybersecurity

  • Objective 2: Nonprofits have an easy on-ramp to cybersecurity, beginning with a relevant risk assessment that prioritizes preventive, focused action at different maturity levels

  • Objective 3: Nonprofits have access to a standard against which they can compare themselves and that is accepted by funders

  • Objective 4: Nonprofits have funding to implement required cybersecurity practices

  • Objective 5: Nonprofits have access to a marketplace of vendors providing quality, cost-effective solutions
